Frequently asked questions
What does the research show about gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS?+
Forty-plus years of peer-reviewed research support gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS. Miller 2015 (PMID 25736234) reports a 76% response rate across an unselected sample of 1,000 patients on the Manchester Protocol. Peters 2016 (PMID 27397586) found gut-directed hypnotherapy equivalent to the low-FODMAP diet for symptom relief in a randomised controlled trial. It is recommended by NICE (UK), the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American College of Gastroenterology.
Is gut-directed hypnotherapy covered by insurance in Alberta or Canada?+
Hypnotherapy is generally not directly covered under Canadian extended health benefit plans. Some clients can claim related programs (stress management, behavioural change) under a Wellness Spending Account (WSA) if their plan offers one. Coverage rules depend entirely on plan design, so check with your insurance provider before booking. Sessions are paid at time of service; a detailed receipt with the practitioner’s ARCH registration number is provided for any reimbursement your provider may approve.
How many sessions do I need?+
Our program structure is a 3-session commitment. Clients typically report meaningful change within 2 to 3 sessions. After the initial commitment, continuation is optional and depends on how you're doing. Some clients wrap there, others continue for several more sessions depending on the complexity of their gut-brain presentation.
Is virtual gut-directed hypnotherapy as effective as in-person?+
Research suggests yes. Hasan 2019 (PMID 30702396) compared face-to-face gut-directed hypnotherapy (76% response) to telehealth delivery (65% response) and found the difference was not statistically significant. Virtual sessions eliminate travel friction and let you work from the comfort of your own space.
How is this different from the Nerva app?+
Nerva is a self-directed app with 42 recordings. Peters 2023 (PMID 36661117), the authors' own retrospective, reports that only 9% of paying users completed all 42 sessions. Clinician-delivered sessions offer personalization, real-time adjustment to how you respond, and accountability. Which is why research in clinician-delivered gut-directed hypnotherapy shows higher completion and response rates. Many clients who didn't respond to the app find traction with clinician-led work.
What if I don't notice change after the 3 sessions?+
That's why the commitment stops at 3. If you haven't noticed meaningful change by the end of the third session, we'll discuss whether extending is likely to help, whether a different approach is indicated, or whether a referral elsewhere is the right next step. No pressure to continue. The 3-session structure exists so neither of us is locked into something that isn't working.
Do I need a doctor's referral?+
No referral is required. However, gut-directed hypnotherapy is most appropriate for clients with a diagnosed gut condition (IBS, SIBO, functional dyspepsia, GERD, chronic bloating) or one being actively worked up by a gastroenterologist. If your digestive symptoms are new or undiagnosed, please see your GP or a GI first. Hypnotherapy is complementary to medical care, not a substitute for it.
What's the difference between "gut hypnotherapy" and general hypnotherapy?+
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specific clinical protocol designed to target the brain-gut axis. The bidirectional communication between your central nervous system and your digestive system. Suggestions, imagery, and relaxation techniques are tailored to calm visceral hypersensitivity, normalize gut motility, and reduce the stress-response signals that amplify digestive symptoms. It is distinct from general hypnotherapy for habit change, performance, or anxiety unrelated to the gut.
